    You should concentrate on Google .com to promote the website , Google .co.uk is the local data base search.

    Making sure you get links from websites that are hosted in the UK is an important one. I know you mentioned that building links is harder nowadays but it's something you need to do. Building links with roses UK in the anchor will help the website rank for searches on the term "roses uk".

    If you are trying to target Google.co.uk AND another country with Google (Google.com for example) then you should create two sites localized for each. Use geo-targeting to forward users in the UK (and the rest of Europe) to your UK site and North American users to your North American site. This is just an example, depending on what countries you are most actively targeting.

    Here's a PHP code snippet you can use near the top of your page:

    <?php

    geoip_forward_continent("EU", "http://www.mysite.co.uk");
    geoip_forward_continent("NA", "http://www.mysite.com");
    geoip_forward("http://www.mysite.com");

    ?>

    That code uses my Lambda GeoIP script btw. That will forward everyone in Europe to your UK site, everyone in North America to your .com site, and everyone else to your .com site. Its important to use localized versions of the site for SEO purposes (use localized spelling and terminology, local address, etc) if you want to rank for a Google in a specific country.

    Good luck!

    Getting good search rankings is a matter of doing both. At the end of the day, a search engine is just a super computer which tries to make sense of the words on your site (the on-site factors) and the links and words on other sites (the off-site factors), and if you connect them both, it will make the search engine’s job a lot easier, and your results a lot better!

    Thank you guys for all the help. I really appreciate it. One thing about the code 'evanlambda' provided. Don't you think this would be considered as cloaking by Google?

    Why would they ? Google use something similar them selves , Being from the UK we automatically get redirected to google.co.uk if we type google.com . Ebay do it to etc.

    All you are doing it redirecting those local customers to your local versions of the site.

    Although thats only assuming that there are people from the UK hitting your .com which obviously you currently are not because you want to rank in the UK with that .com , If you have another UK site then you'd be optimising that as normal with a UK domain , Uk hosting , uk backlinks and Meta Lang tag to tell google your are targeting UK market , also another google webmaster tools gio location for the UK. That redirect is just a counter measure to ensure that your European visitors are getting to the right site.

    IMO you can't. Lets say your website is selling widgets, and is optimized for that and ranking #1 on google.com (US). A UK site, with a co.uk, also competing for the 'widgets' keyword, is always going to outrank you, as Google sees the .co.uk as being more relevent to the UK market, than yours.

    The reason you see .coms rank in .co.uk is probably because they're registered with Google Webmaster tools and location is set to 'UK'. You could do this with your site, but you may well lose your .com ranking.

    Best way to do it imo is just register a .co.uk.
