If you can not trust Google Keyword tool then you can't trust anything. You have seen a changed search volume because it has increased or decreased. If the search volume stayed the same we wouldn't need keyword tool.
Yes, google adwords gives approximate traffic estimates inrespect of every keyword and also suggest best keyword for your site.
I agree with you. The search volumes have changed. @posters above, there's no reason to be trust Google just too much. Take their backlink count index for example. Keywords which were previously in the low XXXXXX range now show around low XXXXX volume per month(on 'exact' match ofcourse). The search volumes have certainly dropped, unless Google gives a fair reason why there has been more than 60%+ drop in the search volume for each keyword within a span of 5 days in early September, i'll be using alternative keyword tools.
You cannot trust SEO tools hundred percent. You will have to search manually by yourself to verify your tools are correct.
I think Google analytic is trust-able, the difference in search volume is showing just because of new search algorithm.

Google Keyword tool is not accurate but it can give you a good idea of how much search volume a keyword has.
