If one is ready to spend some money, it is just one time spend then i recommend this http://www.link-assistant.com/
This has everything in it, you can spy on your competitors, email your competitors backlinks websites, keyword research and many more tool, this is updated almost every second day as per my experience. BTW that is not an affiliate link, just i use it and very happy with it.

Out of the Free tools i'd highly suggest Web Ceo, Traffic Travis, Scrape Genius & IBP.

From the paid ones, SeNUke, Magic Submitter, UWCS & Micro Niche Finder are undoubtedly the best.

my fave free apps that I use on a daily basis include Google, Bing & Yahoo Webmaster Tools - Google Analytics Keyword Tool - A simple character counter & SEO Site Tools free page rank toolbar for Chrome (this is great).

As for paid apps, I have bought a few over the years but they are nearly all just a load of free services that have been rounded up into a single app and then sold. The only one that I still use on a very regular basis is SEO Elite. Whatever anyone else may say about it I still find it a very good little tool for bringing in legitimate links quickly as well as having a great selection of other tools which prove useful on a regular basis. Im not gonna link them since most of you will be familiar with them plus I dont want people to think Im a Clickbank forum abuser, lol.....
