I don't think there is any use of submitting sites to these search engines. I have never seen any visitors from these search engines.

There are a few thousand search engines (how many is difficult to estimate). But with the main three or four you should cover 99.5% of the traffic. However, if you're interested, here's a list of around 400 search engines: http://selfpromotion.com/list-of-search-engines.t

Try to get also an entry in the main directories - an entry in DMOZ virtually guarantees you an indexing by all search engines that there out there. and as GeekHang points out, with some good contents (or good backlinks) you will eventually be picked up by all SEs...

Why you should submit your website
You don't get high search engine rankings just by submitting your website to search
    engines.
You invite search engines to visit your website
When you submit your website URL to a search engine, you basically ask the search
engine spiders to visit your website and to evaluate it. If the search engine spiders
cannot find anything useful on your site, they won't list your website.
It doesn't make sense to submit your website to search engines if you haven't
    optimized it before.

Web page optimization and link building are more important than search
engine submission. However, search engine submission still helps you to inform
search engines and Internet directories about your website.

Automatic submission is not even the best, rather i prefer pinging the search engines.

I found it best to submit a paid listing to Yahoo
Advertise PPC on Google ,Yahoo, and Bing and you will get indexed quickly.
Optimize your site before you submit.

Yeah, 90% of the Search engine traffic flows from google. Then there is Bing and Yahoo. I never heard of these SE's before.

I was being sarcastic - i know there are MANY search engines - however I bet that 99% of all people dont use more than 3 in their daily search routine
