Can someone explain this to me...

I am using wordpress and my dashboard is showing pending comments and they are pingbacks from sites I put my links on...

What does this mean? Why are they showing as comments? and what are pingbacks?

 

Pingbacks are notifications from other blogs that they are linking to you.

You should install a ping management plugin to avoid pinging yourself and from over pinging.

Pingback spam is becoming a new blackhat trend, so be wary of accepting pingbacks (their link will show up on your website..)

You can delete them because if you accept them you promote that site.

Google will generally NEVER penalize you for permalink ping backs. Only if it was a new site and the link velocity spiked... then you *might* have a problem.

 

Pingback is a method for authors to get notification if someone links to their document or blogs. In other words, the web publishing software automatically inform the author on behalf of the user to allow for the creating links to referring documents.

 

I often wondered about pingbacks myself, nice to know...

Thanks guys, I had my first ping back and wondered what on earth it was. I checked the site out, and they were indeed displaying a link back to mine, so I thought it was only fair that I accept. I have no problem with people adding their backlinks onto my site, as long as they are appropriate, and are happy to give me a mention or let me backlink from theirs!
