    That's a bit extreme isn't it?
Link exchanges can't get you banned or have any bad effects if done right, neither do they help much.

Link exchanges have been dead for a long time, but I don't think they will get your site banned, they just won't do you any good. A link exchange is where I give you a link, and you give me one. Link building on the other hand, is good, an is what google is looking for, and using a service like the one shown in the link on this thread, can be a real time saver.

An honest link exchange is a good thing, as it just represents two sites with a true editorial need to link to each other. As long as their sites' content remains good, worthy, and spam-free, the SEs won't frown on it. But a pure transactional link exchange for SEO purposes, conducted with unscrupulous sites who are just after a backlink, is playing with SE fire, as they may devalue your site in the long run. Google does not like link schemes, paid links, etc, and it's clear why... those things lead to sites that are linked to stuff that searchers don't really want to find, and Google always serves their users first (as they should).
Unfortunately, the best way to build links on the web is also the most tedious and frustrating... make requests, most of which will be ignored, but appeal to a site's sense of editorial quality, and prove to them that your content is link-worthy. If you can do that, you shouldn't even have to offer a link in return.

Here's the biggest problem with link exchanges — next week (or next year?) the other guy may sell his domain name to a porn site, a Viagra site, or the like. And now you have a link from your website pointing out to a porn or Viagra site. Is that what you want?

P.S. I'm not talking just theory. This happened to me before I got very careful about outbound links from my site.

This doesn't make sense to me. Why would search engine penalize people who have like-minded content who choose to link to each other? They have no reason to do that, unless there is evidence that the links were bought or part of a scheme. It is not in their interest to make an automatic assumption that a two-way link is fraudulent, because that would leave millions of honest sites out in the cold. I have a hard time believing that SEs want to do that.

Google has caught up to 3 way links, which is why link wheels got de-indexed. Link exchanges are as valuable as reciprocal links are.... not very unless you do your HW and hit your niches HARD.

The secret to ANY link building is it must look natural, it needs the proper velocity, as well as diversity.

Make sure to exchange links via A>B,C>D method and it should be OK. Of course google can check your whois (even if it's private) to determine if the sites are from different webmasters or not..

my understanding is that Google has also caught up to link wheels, even if they are not "closed", so this should also be done with caution.

My question is how many links can one person hope to exchange per day if they have a pr3 site with unique content added daily? I know this is a broad question but I was wondering what other people get for sites similar to my own. It seems like not too many people respond to link exchange inquiries.
