Forums are usually the places people go to when looking for suggestions, tips, product reviews. You allow yourself to have a wider reach - good for viral marketing. Links in forums do not usually have "no-follow". It also brings about better visibility.

Blogs may not help for google pr, but they certainly can send you real traffic. Imagine this thread is a blog, and I say that posting on a blog can be great bla bla bla, and link to my site explaining what I said. I believe visitors are much more willing to click on that link than a stupid text link ad in my sig. 1 in 10 click thru vs 1 in 100 maybe?

The question wasn't about blog "postings" unless I remember incorrectly. It was about making blog "comments" to get backlinks in them. Big difference in the value. ;) And you'd be surprised at how much traffic forum links can generate, especially if you make quality posts, build a reputation, and post often. Both options also offer the added benefit of networking though, so neither will hurt you... give them both a shot.

We may call it a forum signature or an inline link, after all it's the readers' eyes that your links are meant to capture attention of. A blog layout is generally easier to read, while on forums you often have to "filter" the content and read between the lines to get what you need.

A high traffic forum based on a layout which is less stuffed with buttons and bars can well compete any blogs out there.

I think jl255 has it right.

One other benefit to commenting on blogs is that you are reaching a blog reader. I'm guessing a blog reader would be more likely to subscribe to your feed and thus be more likely to return to your site again. I could be wrong though.

both are important... for SEO purposes i think blog comments are a little better coz it get pagerank easily buy you are into getting traffic forum posting is best...
once blogpost drifted to archives it will never get back to the homepage again and you lost your chance of getting traffic while forum post get bumped to the first page everytime there is new post.

IMHO, forum posting is a way better stuff since people get to see your text/link again and again. Also, you have a profile attached with you, with the information about your seniority, posts and such - so peoples get to know you better and eventually, trust you better.

Good points, ofcourse finding dofollow blogs is a skill all on its own, and not many people are willing to release their dofollow high ranking blogs for all to post to

Both of them are better for marketing. Then concentrate on Classified submission; it will also help your business

I'll prefer to forum posts just because you can have there a fully flashed profile and can have link in post whenever you want to have.

I'm a fan of both. I tend to use blog commenting as a way to introduce my site to others in specific niche markets AND to generate a mass of quality backlinks. I literally took one of my sites from obscurity to a #5 ranking on the 1st page of Google for my targeted keyword with blog commenting (done the RIGHT way, of course). I have a post about blog commenting over at my blog that you may find interesting and will help you understand how to comment on blogs the correct way for maximum results: http://www.moneywitharticles.com/blog-commenting-how-to-get-a-mass-of-quality-backlinks/

I began to look less at blog commenting because the admin may have to approve your comment.

I think they both are helpful but forum posting does bring more traffic than the blog commenting. also Forum posting is easiest way to get traffic and its very simple to do; plus with the signature everyone can see your site on as many forum postings you write. while if you place your site in your blog comments it sort of becomes more like spam(peoples view).
