I think you will find its not 'how many' backlinks but the 'quality' of the backlinks is more important.

Monthly searches doesn't mean squat in terms of difficulty of ranking. Check how many competing websites there are for the keywords in broad and exact searches. If it's under 100,000 (or even 500,000) then it should be easy. I've had EzineArticles and Hubpages pages rank in the top 10 with 0 backlinks for more competitive keywords than that.

If you were to tell us the keyword, then we'd be able to help you, but as you haven't, it's impossible to give you a proper answer, if you private message me the keyword, I'll take a look for you.

You probably only need 10 PR8 backlinks to be #1 and outrank your competition.

There's a lot more to it than just backlinks.

    Google LOVES quality content
    . Everything else comes 2nd.

As a poster above suggested, you should analyze the top 10 sites in google for your keywords. You can do this manually or go get a program like Market samurai which does this quickly.

Install SEO Quake and see how many links the first page has. Just because its low, doesn't mean they didn't optimize.

It really all comes down to how many back links your competition has in the top ten spots...also the quality of those links are important as well....if they are junkie spam links then you can beat them out with some great quality back links....check for the anchor text they used when they created the back links...if the link is optimized with the anchor text then you will need to then analyze the PR of the link and what type of people are linking to those...i tend to dig into my competitions competition.

The amount of traffic is really only good to judge the traffic potential of a market and it doesn't really have anything to do with the back links at all.

Its not a good question since you should focus on how to outrank your competitors instead. It depends on lots of factors, you know... Starting from domain age to keyword and niche.
Shoot me a pm, i can give you some tips and things you need to focus on.

Don't forget to do your on-page SEO as well. You can build tons of backlinks, but if a site is just dominating your site with on-page SEO then you could be building links for a very long time before you pass them. I messed up one of my files and lost my #3 spots for one of my sites. Bombed down to page 5 and it took me quite a while to recover from that. Don't overlook your on-page SEO.

It shouldn't take very many but it depends on how many links your competitors have for that keyword. Ryan Diess has a great tool for finding this out it is called “cherry picker”

Number of backlink is not that important as quality of backlinks. that too build up over a period, coming from different corners, will be more beneficial, i think so.

Some of the members posting in this thread do show how much they know about SEO, and they have the courage to charge people for SEO in the marketplace...

It's not a question of how many searches, but a question of how many people are targeting that same keyword. For example, I have seen keywords with around 10/20 annual searches and more than 100,000 people targeting that keyword.

Like some have already said, research the competition. Market samurai is a great option. Another option is going to Google and searching for: "your keyword" - yes, quoted.
