I'd like to sale on of my websites. However I'm not sure how to transfer the website over to someone else. I know how to transfer the domain .. but what about the files? Can anyone tell me how or point me to something that will? Thanks so much..

Depending on what exactly it is, you would normally either get them to take over your hosting account so no issues, take up a new account with the same host and ask the host to transfer them or give them temporary access to the FTP/ SQL etc to access what they need.

You can wrap it all up yourself but the issue is if the site is still "live" that the database immediately goes out of date the second you do a dump and so the buyer can complaign that when they get round to uploading it a couple of days later its missing data

I'm worried about the database now.. it's a wordpress blog with over 3000 postings ( autoblog ) I don't want to loose all those posting. The host idea sounds easy.. I might be able to have a custom hosting plan made..

Simply go into phpmyadmin and export the entire database. If your hosting control panel is cPanel you can click on backups and backup both your entire web directory and the database from there and then provide them with those files.

Ceaseer's idea would be the safest and the one with the least problems. I have sold many sites like that... giving the hosting account is too complicated.

I,ve done a couple of sites this way with mixed results. If the buyer knows what they are doing, you can give them temporary limited access to your cpanel and they can do it. Make sure you back up that database through whichever way you do it.

Do this. It is the best way. You should have been doing it anyway, just for safety.

Another way is to use "WP Backup" plugin if you are using Wordpress. It automatically does the zip file and you can download it and send it by mail or something. You have to also Export your WordPress settings with your posts, categories, etc. and then send that too. Easy work!

It can be hard if both buyer and seller are new at this. But if the buyer is well up on all of this, you could give them temporary access to your cpanel and let them move it themselfs. just remember to change your passwords after it's all done.

And if you still don't feel convenient by using it yourself, you can ask your Webhost to create a back-up copy of your data and plus your mysql data too. Most of them do this for free, but some might charge. It's really good if you are hosted with a admin you are a friend or something.

Some larger hosting providers transfer Wordpress blogs for free. I believe Hostgator is one of them?

Thanks so much for the advice. The auto blog is only a month old so I think I'm gonna wait a few more weeks before I list it for sale on here or on flippa . I'll keep you all updated. Thanks again!
