First of all check if your site really banned with the ban checker tool. The site also may be penalized by Google. You never can to know definitely about penalty that Googe applied to your site but you are able to estimate the penalty probability with Google penalty detector.

How accurate are those tools? I have sites ranking in the top 10 and both of those tools are saying they appear to be banned. Does it just give inaccurate results for newer sites (since mine are just a few months old)?

The ban checker should be accurate. Banned sites may appear in the Google top rank for low competitive keywords. The penalty detector gives estimation only and doesn't intend to be accurate.

Why would google ban your site if you don't spam? Or you are planning on spamming? :D

Try putting in a request for reconsideration through webmaster tools. It works. Just tell them the truth. What you did, what you might have done wrong, what you think you might have done wrong, and that you won't do it again. It saves everyone a lot of time.
