I see a lot of blog comment spam happening at the moment and most kids appear to think its good for blogs.

Yeah! For SEO....Content is the Real King with combination of excessive backlinks, it is the only basic method of genuine SEO

 

I believe Article Marketing is one of the most effective Seo Techniques. As far as popularity and commonness goes, i'd say that most of the newbies stick to blog commenting and forum signatures to promote their links though it may not necessarily be as effective.
