Page Rank and Linkbacks

I was told that it is pagerank of the webpage that links back to you, That governs the worth of the linkback, and not the Page Rank of of the actual website/home page.

    If that is true ?

if so then I don't see the value in products like link market and linkmanger telling you what the websites/ sites hompage rank is because websites seem to never put links on the home page ?

I would really like to know which is true and how it really works.

    Thanks

If example.com is a PR4 and you comment on example.com/mypost which is only a PR1, you will only get a PR1 link.

Yes, the page rank of the domain if different from the page rank of some page of the website. So you get page rank namely from the PAGE, but not from domain, if I understood the question correctly.

If you are talking about page rank only then yes, it depends on the PR of the page where your link placed.

But if your are considering and looking for SERP then forget about PR, check the quality and popularity of that page from where you are getting backlink. Even if it's PR0, it can boost your SERP.
