I think if you're honestly going to be in a serious relationship, there needs to be some kind of understanding of trust between both people. If you need to check your significant other's phone then obviously there are trust issues I'd say.
Yes if you need to check eachother's phones all the time that means there are trust issues. But you shouldn't say "no" because that would assume you have something to hide.
