If you want to rank well for Google.com visitors from the US then I would suggest: 1) You have a non-ccTLD domain... You want a .com, .net, .org, etc. type of domain and NOT a country coded TLD like .co.uk, .co.in, etc. 2) You want your site hosted in the US 3) Build links from other sites that are targeting Google.com. Getting links from sites targeting Google.com will help you rank better for US visitors than getting links from other ccTLD domains like example.co.uk that are targeting country-specific views of Google like Google.co.uk. 4) Use content and terminology that is local to the US. For example, don't use British English... use American English. There is a difference. 5) Perform on-page and on-site optmizations for your site as you would any other site.

Hosting does matter, but very little. TLDs can have some effect on rankings on geographic based search. Site submission to local directories, local online classifieds, article submission related to the product or service on offer will give you a major boost. Also, you can try exchanging links from local websites similar to yours.
Try to get a link from US local directories, classifieds and portals. Also assign Geographic target as United States in Google webmaster tools.
