I am John Oliver from California. I wish to study web designing. So i want to know What is Web design and Graphic desing? Are they related? If so, how? By John Oliver
How do you know if you want to study it, if you don't know what it is? "Graphic design" is usually used to talk about things like branding, packaging, posters, magazines etc but it really just means designing graphics which could be applied to lots of stuff. "Web design" is graphic design for the web, a good web designer learns a lot of the same stuff as a graphic designer but a lot of extra, web-specific stuff too like UI design, usability etc. The whole point is to design something that helps the website communicate whatever it's trying to say.
I totally agree with kiramanic. When you're qualified web designer, you won't gonna pass through without Graphic design skills. It's very connected. When I'm saying very, it means that it's like a world without a sun, you know what I mean If you're a web programmer like (php_ specialist) then you won't gonna need web design skills either graphic design as well.

kiramanic is right on point, why would you want to study something that you have no clue what it is? What it entails? This my opinion but I would think you would study something you know a little something about it and want to know it in detail that is why you study it. If that makes sense.
I thought I better pop back in here and point out that I'm not having a go or anything, it just seemed like a weird question
Perhaps the idea appeals, perhaps he heard that there's good money to be made, maybe he finds the idea of being able to work as a freelancer appealing. Graphic design is creating images for use online, like web graphics, banners, etc or for printed items; flyers, posters, etc, as well as other things like logos, using graphic design software. You don't need to shell out for expensive software to start off, as there are plenty of open source graphic design applications out there. Web design, whilst it does entail some graphic design, is more to do with creating the content and structure of web pages using HTML and then styling it and setting the style and layout with CSS. You can either write the code from scratch into a text editor, or use a graphical editor like Dreamweaver. I'd look online, do some research on it first, read a few articles on about.com to see what the work entails, you'll also find guides and tutorials there. Here's a good starting point: http://computer.howstuffworks.com/search.php?terms=web+pages - how web pages are created http://webdesign.about.com/od/beginningtutorials/p/bl_begin.htm - learning html http://desktoppub.about.com/od/graphicdesign/Graphic_Design_Tutorials.htm - learn graphic design There's a good bit of learning involved, mostly through trial and error, but everyone's got to start somewhere! Remember everyone in this forum started off the same way, nobody is born a web or graphic designer, even the best designers in the world had to learn the basics, same as anything else.
