Is it better to target less competitive keywords before you target more competitive ones?

If you mean it's better to start off with the little less competitive keywords to learn and gain experience to then later target a more difficult keyword, then yes it's better :)

The main thing is that you need to target those keywords which bring you the business. Not categorize the keywords in higher and lesser format. Optimized your site with right keywords and you will get the rankings surely even keywords is more competitive.

Does not matter which keywords you try to rank with, BUT, it is ideal to go for long tail versions of the keyword

I agree with Promoman, target first long tail versions of the main keyword you want to target so rake in traffic (and income) while you gradually build up your links. And the nice thing: The long tail keywords ALSO include your target keyword, so ultimately ytou are also working towards getting good SERP in that particular keyword...

it's better to start with lesser competitive since if the domain is brand new, you can't do anything excessive for backlinks (and you need that for harder kw)

If your website is quite new even if you target very competitive keywords, you will not be able to achieve rankings fast. So basically you work for nothing. You need to start first with lower competitive keywords. Then once the website receive reputation, and it became more and more established in search engines you can go for the bigger ones. However you need to consider even 6 months for moderate keywords and over 12 months for really targeted keywords.

It all depends on your current website status, how old it is, and how many links you have for your website at the moment.
If you send me your website URL I can make for you a complete SEO analysis

    looking forward,
    T.B

I also believe it is better to target the less competitive long tail keyword phrases first and graduate to the more competitive main keywords

It is always good to segregate all your keywords in the order of importance and target them phase-wise.
Initially at the start of the campaign, start with long-tail keywords with high search density and relatively low competition. Then narrow down on more competitive keywords with higher search density.

I can answer this in this way.
If your website is about Acne.
firstly forget about optimizing for acne (the primary one word keyword). You will never be able to do that.
Now say you want to optimize ultimately for that two word keyword acne treatment, forget about optimizing for it for a while.
now take one even more specific keyword like best natural acne treatment It would be much easier to optimize for it.
Keep on optimizing for other ones like:
    all natural acne treatment
    natural acne treatment system
    natural acne treatment products
    the best natural acne treatment

After you do all this, you will be optimized for natural acne treatment. You need to optimize one page each for separate sub-keyword and link all of them to a parent page.
now in a similar fasion, optimize more parent pages for keywords like:
    skin acne treatment
    natural acne treatment
    acne treatment reviews
    acne treatment gel
    new acne treatment
    acne treatment system
    best acne treatments
    exposed acne treatment
    clear acne treatment
    acne treatment cream
    facial acne treatment
    back acne treatment
    the best acne treatment
    body acne treatment
    severe acne treatment
    rosacea acne treatment

and link all of them to the grand parent page which you want to optimize for the keyword Acne treatment.
If you can afford it, you can also try many grand parent pages to each achieve optimization for the keyword acne.
In each and every step use Google Keyword Tool to find highly searched keywords which have low competition so that you can gain a lot of traffic from them out of least efforts.

Hope I am clear and helpful

Better to target less competitive keywords as they are easy to rank and that will generate more traffic and later you can go for tougher ones....

wow, thanks for all the feedback. it seems overwhelming like i should target the less competitive keywords first - going for longtail phrases. i will definitely pursue that route. really good feedback and much appreciated.
