If you are student you can get an account opened in just Rs.100 in Punjab National Bank. :D
And if you are not having any bank account in India then you can open a 0 balance account in HDFC or any bank.

Rightman and Deluxdon seems to have a fortune of having the luxury of residing besides two and even three branches of SBI. Else, sometimes SBI has also been seen tossing the potential customers from one branch to another.

I guess these branches came into existence close to each other simply because of the merger of SBI subsidiaries with itself. As regards tossing of customers, they would instead look to retain you... if you have a good track record! :)

    Hey Rightman,

That's why I used the word "potential customers". It's not about tossing their existing customers - as they can't do that atleast with their premium customers. A couple of times, they were a bit un-supportive to me despite of managing a hefty and bulky business with them. Although a simple intimation of moving my account elsewhere worked like a charm and they were just regretful and promised me firmly that such things will not happen again. But I had taken my decision - I opened two more accounts in HDFC and BOI immediately and moved the big chunk of my business there. Since then, they still ask me to forgive them and return the business there whenever I meet them.

But the point here is, that they are not as polite as above when it comes to making new clients. They simply toss the person to another branch saying they can't open the account with them. What's more ridiculous that the other branch says the same!

Well, If you want the banks with minimum deposit of Rs.1000 then SBI is a nice option else ICICI and HDFC are another nice options.

Being a subsidiary of SBI, isn't it already merged with its parent SBI?

I have myself tried some banks and found that private banks are very expensive. They have a lot of misc fees. A fees for almost everything.
Now, the public sector banks also provide all the services, you just need to hit the right branch.
For example one branch of SBI may not be providing wire transfer while other may be providing it. So open your account in the biggest branch of the city, the main branch of the city.
I prefer SBI and my account is in the Main Branch Bhopal. They provide a Yuva Card for free which is as good as Credit Card, works internationally and can be used to verify PayPal account. PNB is not a good option as they do not provide detailed statements and also have many problems while using their Debit card for online shopping.
You can however get a zero balance account in any bank if you are a student and the bank is running a scheme. but even then fees in private banks will be very high.

However opening account in big branch is not easy, so you can temporarily open your account in a small branch and then transfer your account to the desired branch.

    (Experience)
    Hope it helps : )

As for as i am concerned hdfc bank and axis bank both are good for netbanking, the minimum balance may vary from city to city from 5k to 10k, if you do more transaction no need to think of minimum balance.

If you need an account for online activity then I would recommend HDFC. It has probably the best support and best coverage in this area.
