If you got a good story and it makes it on stumbleupon, than you can expect consistent traffic. :D
I'm talking from experience of course..one of my tech blog made it there and there was a spike in traffic by 3000 uniques on the day it was featured and has ever since contributed a constant traffic of 400 uniques per day.

That's what I mean, sometimes the easiest (and very effective) methods of promotion are overlooked. Your DP RSS feed can bring a good amount of visitors if you work on writing catchy titles for your posts.

Depends what you want to do and what you mean by promotion?
    1) get organic traffic?
i'd go with forum posting and blog commenting

    2) pump up your PR?
grow your backlinks by article submission and press release submission

    3) grow your list
do a promotion: I got a 140 strong list in a week, by doing my $99 Robert Allen giveaway

    here's another hint.
everything takes time to build up a critical mass.

don't expect a miracle with your first press release (you might've submitted on a busy day, the editor might've been lazy, your copywriting was off that day, etc).

every method has an equal chance of being successful, provided you give it a fair shake.

i know guys who try every method once, get little or no results, then declaration that all traffic generation is a scam.

i think they couldn't be further from the truth.

it's like getting into skates the first time, falling a whole bunch and then declaring that skating sucks.

    i guess it's their loss.
(and i get a much bigger rink to skate in!)

Word of the mouth sometimes do good effect sometimes

i run a link roll in my MSN private message linking to the sites i love to visit

i change the link every few days - that's free advertising for other sites

u might say "how many ppl do you have on your MSN ? "

i'll say, and how many ppl on MSN of the ppl i'm talking with ?

if lots of ppl do the same thing, MSN and any IM will generate some traffic to some sites

i think that's a unique idea - take care i hold the copy writes :p

Take the time to plan and write quality posts. I've started spending more time on each of my posts in recent days, and I'm already starting to notice an increase in traffic.

I think the best way to promote a blog is to link link link! Wordpress sends trackbacks for every link out, so post about other's post, give good comments, and link to them!

Of course, there are methods like directory submissions, digg-ing your stories, reddit and stuff. Just put your URL wherever you go.
