Are you asking, "which content management system is more widely used?" or "which CMS is bigger?" or "which CMS is better?" by Bigger... i don't understand your question. I use Joomla - like it alot. Fast, flexible, lots of templates out there, easily modifiable. Haven't used the others - I've heard some stuff about Drupal that sounds pretty good, and i think there are also alot of Mambo users.
I use Joomla. I'm currently evaluating XOOPS and DRUPAL. The two look promising but Joomla is really easy to use and will really help you to deploy your website rapidly. However, Joomla is designed for Apache so if you are using a Windows hosting service, you might encounter some problem.
To Torkill, I didn't like XOOPS. I find it hard to manage and in my own opinion, is too far left behind by joomla. Joomla also has a great community and third party extensions that will help you As for drupal, I haven't checked on it yet. I downloaded 4.7 and it says that it is tested in apache. The site I plan to put up will be in windows server so that's IIS. My thinking is that, if I will be forced to use apache, then I'll just use Joomla.
Joomla by far, it's a more mature version of Mambo and the new version coming out soon will put most other CMSs to shame by default. Very easy to extend, customise and the rest of it and would recommend it to anyone!
Let google trends answer this question http://www.google.com/trends?q=joomla,+mambo,+drupal,+xoops&ctab=1&geo=all&date=all
I think you'll see Joomla overtanking Mambo very soon. Most of the Mambo developers are now developing for Joomla and IMO it's becoming much more flexible as it distinguishes itself from Mambo.
It's a policy of to each his own .... Joomla is a continuation of the Mambo Site Management Software !!! The Mambo project was halted and it was re-opened by another company with the name Joomla ...It's the same thing, For me Wordpress owns the scene Very Very Very Good for simple site development Easy to Manage and Easy to update !! If it is a complex site, it is non other than Joomla, Have used Cpgnuke and php fusion on one my sites but after gainign a lot of traffic i moved to a Vbulletin only site and now maintain the rest of the site as HTML ... So Basically Wordpress and Joomla Abhishek
I know it's the same software, (hence "......more flexible as it distinguishes itself from Mambo.") though I understood that the Mambo software was going to be continued to be developed? Most of the Mambo developers seem to now be developing for Joomla, though I thought there were still a few working on the project?
Check these links ... its becoz of the fork between the core developers and miro corporation that joomla was born ... read this ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joomla
I think Joomla is bigger open source community and very powerful. I developed a lot of websites using Joomla open source and best open source as compared to other open source scripts.
i use drupal. u can preview my drupal site: http://www.myhotelforum.com/ drupal is a clean cms. but cpu is problem.

Since term "Mambo" does not only apply to the CMS, Google Trends is not producing a perfect picture. The rest of the terms are fine, though.
Define bigger? Only the users? Or companies/organisations? Joomla is most popular at the moment how ever Drupal is most used by (big) companies/organisations. As far as I know there aren't any big companies or organisations which use Joomla. So if you are looking for a quality comparison I would suggest you for going for the users and not the amount of it.
Drupal is biggest Php based CMS, If you are talking about biggest CMS its liferay or Alfrasco. These are JAVA and Enterprise based CMS
