Too many spammers

I have been overwhelmed with the number of comments but they are all spam commenters, with business names or promotions from many different emails like "how to get your ex back".

How do I stop spam comments?
Like, is there a way that they cannot even submit a comment if it's spammy?
(so that it says "error- cannot submit")

Download the "Akismet" plugin and get an API key for non-commercial use. It is created by the makers of WordPress (Automattic) and it does a very good job of cutting down spam comments, protected my sites from over 20,000 so far.

If it is the blog in your sig, remove it until you get proper spam protection. Akismet is good. Also, don't forget to make use of your comment black list in your "Discussion" settings.

Yes if you are talkin about your WP blog, just activate that Akismet plugin, it will do 99% of the work. You don't even have to download it, it's already in your plugins. Akismet is so good it is installed by default with the WordPress installation ;)

Akismet as one of the best comment spam blockers for WordPress.

    you can also add keywords that you may want to block by going to the following;

Comment Moderation box in your wp-admin/options-discussions.php

I agree with everyone, activate your akismet (akismet come with the wordpress installation, it just needs to be activated). Here is a video how to activate akismet plugin, if it doesn't really help, wp spam free plugin will definitely helps too.

It is true that many spam comments pass Akismet protection, but they are only few, once a day or so. You need 2 seconds to delete them so focus on doing something than stopping something.

Use Akismet and hopefully a unix server where you can use a great .htaccess file to black list certain IP's. Check your server logs and block those IP's. rg.

Or just put comments in hold mode untill you review them. It takes me about 3 minutes a day to weed out the spam and just publish the good comments...

Ya gotta love Word Press,, it has so many ways to do the same job....

Yes, Askimet works really well. I believed WP3.0 has Askimet install with it and that saves you the trouble of installing it :)

Since I turned on the Akismet plugin these spam comments have gone from thousands and thousands a day to just a couple a week. :)

I'd also recommend Akismet. Easy to set up and very effective.

Thank you, all of you, for that. I installed the Akismet but I still get spam comments passed through. It is only a couple per day though, so it's really good.
Most spammers are posting the same comment multiple times on multiple pages and then complain the comments aren't showing up. :)

If its a regular spammer then pick out their keywords and add them to your blacklist of words in comments and that should give you 100% spam free.
