I've come here as fast as I could when I read this:

    http://www.google.org/

Is this the answer we've been hoping for? A manned directory site to replace dmoz.org? Just wondering?

Or is it come sort of donations type thing?
philanthropic - Philanthropy involves the donation or granting of money to various worthy charitable causes. It is seen as a way to directly effect change in society without recourse to the bureaucratic mechanisms of government. Someone who practices philanthropy is known as a philanthropist. Philanthropy is a major source of income for artistic, musical, religious, and humanitarian causes.

Looks like an obvious philanthropic move.

It’s a great PR strategy and a nice boost in conscience cleansing.

Another intelligent move by S. & L...Definitely done with Google Style.

"Google is looking for an Executive Director to lead the Google Foundation. The ideal candidate will be a highly entrepreneurial and skilled manager with a passion for using innovation and technology to make the world a better place. The Executive Director will play the key role in working with our founders and senior executive team to define the mission of the Google Foundation and to build an organization capable of carrying out that mission through investing in socially progressive companies, making targeted philanthropic donations, influencing public policy, and managing teams working on significant Foundation-based projects."

No real directory could replace dmoz.org, with it's current content, loyal editors and volunteers.

Google might, possibly, but it will take him many years, that is IF it will be possible.

    This is my opinion :)

Have you heard anything like enterprise fusions?

Just what if? Shareholders could put pressure on merging whatever into the Google enviroment... be it a directory...

And why replace? They use the dmoz base allready, if I'm not wrong :)

It isn't about a directory...it is about donations and assistance...speaking of that:

My largest problem is the lack of adsense revenue the last week...maybe they can work on that first.

Anyway, how'd you lay out "the largest of the world's problems"? :)

    Nice first post! Welcome!

On topic: Why would Google invest manpower in organising stuff manually when all they do now is organise stuff algorithmetically? Wouldn't make sense to me if they did that.

Yeah, welcome, guess yer not alone (->BS) :D

As they still have to define their mission - maybe you know something nobody else knows?

Would you mind to share? :)
