The only easy way I know is to create a large number of backlinks from a variety of sources like: blogs on different Class C ips, article directories, RSS Feed Dir., Social Bookmarking Sites, Web 2.0 Properties, forum links, and social media sites like Facebook and Twitter.

I have gotten keywords on the first page in a matter of minutes. However, the more competitive the keyword-the more work it takes...

Remember, you can always outsource your link building!

    Good luck.
    :)

I have spent thousands of pounds buying backlines and SEO services from DP Members and other places on the web for my old website and really I have not gained any long-term benefits.

I have recently started a new website and I am doing most of the SEO work myself, and surprisingly for 5 keyword which I am optimising my site for is ranking very well in Google.

    Checkout the followings keywords:

    (1) pay as you go mobile phones, I am on the 2nd pages of Google and position 6

    (2) payg mobile phones, I am on the 2nd pages of google and position 9

I am hoping in around 2 month from now I should be on the top page of Google and my position will be between 1-5 for most of my keywords. I am aiming to get 500.000 visitors to my site by end of the year from search engines.

I am doing the following to achieve this:

    1) Posting unique SEO articles on my websites, 1 – 2 per week
    2) Making use of the meta-tags and descriptions on every pages
    3) Using keywords on heading and titles where possible
    4) Using heading on urls
    5) Building quality backlinks
    6) Directory submissions
    7) Sponsoring themes

I think the most important things is content for the website, if you can have good and unique article for you site you can easy rank high for competitive keywords, content is really king when it comes to SEO.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that there is no sure fire plan to get #1. I have an Australian site with about 130 backlinks, none of which are THAT good, and it ranks for one of the world's most competitive terms over sites that have thousands of backlinks (lots with higher PR than mine) and lots more on page optimization and domain age.

    Google is such a mystery.

.... i'm going to go buy some links for my competitors then! why push yourself up when you could just push your competitors down...

It doesn't seem to work that way otherwise SEO would be easy... :)

I agree with domenic, if you buy too many links from shady SEO's running scripts to acquire those links you could get penalized. Best way to get good traffic is to target places where your potential visitors are visiting. Forums, blogs, niche resources, etc.

If you do hire an SEO make sure it's a reputable one who offers whitehat manual link building tactics like article creation, submissions to directories, on-page optimization, etc.

If your website is your business, then it's worth spending the money to improve it imo. If you have the budget to do some PPC and hire an SEO for creating content and quality links, you'll definitely get more traffic.

Remember even if your site ranks in the top 10, it won't mean you'll get lots of traffic. Try to view serps and visitors as seperate categories which must be addressed individually.

    "Easy way":

    • For competitive terms, there is no easy way. Webmasters with high-ranking web pages featuring competitive terms usually get high rankings through broad-based, well-researched, and well-implemented SEO.

    • For noncompetitive keywords, it's pretty easy to get on the first page with just good, basic SEO (keyword research, keyword-rich titles, links to the page, etc., etc.).

Yes, I wouldn't recommend buying links either. Stick to white hat methods. Also link exchanging isn't the best method either imo. In my experience Google doesn't like this either.

Try and get quality one-way links to your site. Make sure all pages on your site are well written and above all, unique. If they are other sites in your niche will link to your site automatically.

Thanks for so many excellent contributions, all.

But this link building business does get tricky, doesn't it? No one wants to be associated with a link farm and be dropped from the search engines. But seems like it takes forever to get links otherwise.

Guess article marketing and quality commenting is the safest way to build back links.

i think just buying links are not enough. Quality of links does matter. You have to consider domain authority and age as well

As far as I know, these are good things to observe in competition analysis. You may want to include analyzing how much the backlinks containing your search term held in web pages with PR. And how much backlinks are derived from aged domains and editorial sites.
