Leave site and then come back to it one month later...

If I leave my site and come back to it one month later to do the backlinking will this affect the SERP or am I doomed if I don't start backlinking every day. I'm competing for a keyword that has been dominated by two sites that have been on the first page #1 and #2 for 2 years, and now (regretfully) I'm starting to think that building a site around this keyword was a bad idea.... and that I should move onto other sites (that are much easier to rank for) Can anyone advice me. Thanks

Ya definitely it will affect because seo is the continuous process. And if we leave in between it will definitely affect it's ranking...

Yes, work on your backlinking campaign weekly for best results. Those other sites you are competing with probably have over 1000 backlinks, which will be hard to steal their place. Have you checked how many backlinks they have to their sites? I'd check that first to see if it's even worth the fight.

Well it depends what you mean by "affect the SERP". Like the other commenters said, it's best to be active and consistent with your link building. You get out what you put in. I have sites that rank really well for competitive keywords and I have not touched them for over 2 years!! Not all sites get links constantly. It's quite natural for a site to get links in bursts.

it wont kill you though.....there are nmillions of sites that are built...exist for years, then the owners decide they need SEO. The only bummer is those #1 and #2 sites have a year head start on you!
