    Hi fellow webmasters,

I needed your opinion before setting up a blog on .us TLD . My servers are in US , and traffic i need is from the US. All the domains except .info and .us is left for me to purchase. I am from india , and i have hardly seen any .us site in the top 10 of my google page [ie .co.in] for any query.

I want to askt that is it possible to land in the top ten position for a keyword contained in the domain name with a .us extension. All i know is .info domains dont reach top 10 easily . Do you think using hyphen witha .com or .org tld will be better than a no hyphen .us domain ?

    thanks

If you not able to get the without hyphen version of domain then only go for hyphen version.

Not at time. Hyphens are usually incorporated in the domain to improve domain readability. It is also an option for those webmasters who have got their domain already taken by others less the hyphen. Put hyphens in domain with purpose though. For a ridiculous hyphenated domain idea, ri-di-cu-lous.com is such a bad idea.

I have answered questions about hyphens in URLs and SEO so many times that I decided to write a post on the topic.

While hyphens in your domain don't directly affect SEO, if you're building a brand it can indirectly affect SEO by making the acquisition of natural links over time much slower. Hyphens can affect the ability of users to remember, type, say your domain name.

Many people (not search engines) view domains with hyphens as less legitimate than those without hyphens (similar to how non-.coms domains are seen by many users as less legitimate than .com domains). This "perception" that a hyphenated domain is less legitimate "can" make it tougher to acquire natural back links.

It's not an issue, however, if you're just using your domain to run an online business like an affiliate site that you are only promoting online where you don't care whether people can remember your domain, whether it's easy to type or not... because they will ONLY be getting to it by clicking on an organic entry in the SERPs or a PPC ad.

I have many websites which use a hyphen and I know for a fact hyphens do not hurt seo. The only draw back is, hyphens in URLs are less 'memorable' for people. But I never let that stop me.

I tis not as good as exact match, I have found.

    Ex> "HarryJackson.com" will always beat "Harry-Jackson.com"

Remember that Google prefers what people naturally look for, and most people do not put dashes in their search terms.

I've never seen any proof that it matters to the search engines.
I think it's more important how it looks to a human user. Some hypenated domains look just fine, others look spammy.
If it looks ok, I wouldn't worry. If it looks spammy, I'd skip it. :)
