My new website Uses photos of DVD covers in order to link you to each movies page. I've realized if I keep going the way I am, no one will be able to load the page in a decent amount of time. I've thought of using a sliding banner like cnet.com or any news site uses, but I can't find any good html code for it. Do you guys think its a good idea to do this and have a index of text links below it, or is there another way to organize my site and still use the photos the site is www.screenvice.com please check it out before you give me any advice so you know what I'm talking about THANKS GUYS
also wondering if it would be ok to continue with the mosaic of photos, but once I add a few more, start on a new page..
First of all, I think your screen is already too wide. Your screen is about 1500 pixels wide According to http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_display.asp less than 19% of browsers will be able to see your page without having to scroll left and right. Look at the attachment and you will find that about 20% of users still use 1024x768 as their screen resolution, and you should use this as your base-line. (1024 - borders and scroll bars = 970 to 975 depending on system and browser type) In fact I would recommend 960 because it divides nicely by 2,3,4,5,6,8,10,12 and more... Now to your question: A sliding banner will not solve the problem because the banners graphics will have to load too (usually before the rest of the page). BTW, sliding banners are not in HTML, they usually are in Javascript although you can make one in pure CSS too. Neither will make your page load faster. You may want to consider reducing the "weight" of your graphics by reducing the number of colors and by reducing the pixel/cm (pixel/inch) ratio. But even this is only a stop-gap measure. Sooner or later you will have high load times again. I would suggest that you divide up your page into different genres and post them separately.
