phpBB Sucks

If your hosting control panel supports cron scheduling then you can use that to run a script to backup your databases regularly.

 

That's also true but the same limitations may apply re: disk usage on the server.

 

I was thinking to use phpBB, but now I more tend towards vBulletin now.

 

A matter of personal choice, of course, but may I ask why?

 

They are both good if you have programmers that know what they are doing and stay up to date, you need a lot more knowledge to run phpBB

 

I dont think you need to be a programmer, just be able to backup your database daily so if anything happens you do not lose everything

 

Most of the forums that did not have programmers on staff were shut down a while back, some of them for weeks and some for good because of the "traffic bot worms".

Yeah, alot of people are asking to be hacked or open to attack by failing to carry out essential upgrades. If you go to phpbb.com and read the posts which are related to being hacked then 95% of them are out dated versions of phpbb.

Anyone who had upgraded to I think it was 2.0.11 at that point wasn't vulerable. You might be amazed to learn how many were not only not running the latest version but some were way back on version .4 to .6 -- FIVE to SEVEN upgrades behind!

That's half the problem with the Microsoft vulnerabilities issues too -- if you can't be bothered to pay attention to the release of FREE critical updates, then don't complain about the software when you get hacked or infected.

 

Microsoft is getting much better. Their Automatic Updates, although can be thought of as invasive, keep my machine up, running and clean.

Does the Mac OS have something similar?

 

Even after all the hacks and the Santy worms, I read a post just a couple of days ago at phpbb.com where someone was asking how to upgrade from version 2.0.6 -- I don't know how that guy's forum is still even afloat after the past few months.

I would love a self updating package. Alas all web applications are lacking in regards to installers. I dream of a time where you don't have to keep making changes to templates after each upgrade or FTP files back and forth.

 

ThinkBling -- you do NOT need to redo all your template changes if you keep current with recent updates. Each time an update is released, they release the changes as a MOD -- you can even use EasyMod to automate the update for you so it becomes like a 1 minute process.

This will leave all your customization and installed MODS as is.

On the other hand, if you haven't updated in a while (3 or more updates behind), yes yo will need to reinstall those MODs -- clearly, the lesson is keep abreast of updates and you save yourself a lot of headaches in more ways than one.

 

Right now on my site we're using PunBB, it's pretty unknown, but the support and stuff is very good. They always release security updates as soon as they find something out.

Anyway, it's always good to do backups, especially on a forum board because you don't really want to lose anyones profiles, post counts, and threads.

Free stuff always sucks.

In any event I am using phpBB on about 15 different forums with varying degrees of sucess. Never had an issue, so long as it was up to date. I've seen worse from free software. I really can't complain with phpBB.

 

While we're on the subject, version 2.0.14 has just been released.

True, but this update seems to include some minor bug fixes. Nothing really security, or hack related. The only thing I see that is, is that they now removed the version number from the admin page as well. This was done previously as there were worms that would go out and look for sites with specific version numbers, then report back sites that had older (exploitable) versions.

I cannot see any hurry in updating to 2.0.1.4.

Oh, I agree.. You should certainly upgrade. I was just saying that if you wait a day or two, its not like you are gonna get hacked.

 

Agreed. It's an update but not a "critical" update, I guess.
