I have read on a site, if our site takes long time to load, then search engine can penalize our website. Is it true ? Can any one explain this how it is possible ?

    Thank's & Regard's

As my knowledge, downloading speed is not reason to penalize a website

Well, there is no such update from Google that stats that due to poor load time, it is going to penalize your website. However, as per Google latest update, Google now considers load speed of a website as a potential factor to award rankings of your website in search engine results pages.

Google will not penalize you for slow speed, but yes google will not give you preference over a similar site having good speed.
so in other way you may consider it as a penalty.

If two site are exactly similar in every respect like
    *site1.com good speed
    *site11.com less speed

    Then Google will prefer site1.com

Google sees internal and external links as a referral from one website to another. This is important because when a reputable website refers another website, Google's rating of the other website will rise.

speed matters.. not directly but indirectly.

slow pages will increase user bounce rate..

    bounse rate = low rankings

Not really.. this is not the reason to penalize the website. Loading time doesn't make any relation with penalty.. There could be many other reasons to penalize the website like duplicate content etc. So don't worry if your website take more loading time. But try to make it less as it would loss your customers or clients if speed is slow.

Google has been hinting towards including page load speed being a ranking factor for last 2 years. I think it definitely is 'one' of the many factors but I don't think it has a huge impact either way.

Google has said that the speed that a website loads is a very minor element to how it ranks a website. It is really there as a leveler for 2 equal website's, the quicker loading website will rank higher.

Thats not a very important factor.. Google considers around 200 factors and load time is one of them... So I believe it doesn't make any considerable difference.

Google don't penalize the website since the website loading speed.

Penalize the site accoring to following factors.
    1.Duplicate content
    2.Keyword stuffing
3.Back ground colour and body font colour are same.

I don't think Google will ever penalize you for loading times, but it is a considerable factor in ranking you among competition.

If your page is SO slow the bot decides your server is down (i.e. it times out) then you will suffer all sorts of problems, including pages dropping out of the index and suchlike.

This is incorrect; it IS part of the ranking factor, albeit a minor one (today anyway). See here.
    http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2010/04/using-site-speed-in-web-search-ranking.html

You do NOT get a penalty for duplicate content. There is no such thing.

Speed is a part of Google algorithm but i heard first time that Google penalize site due to slowness. I think speed not a penalizing factor.
