There is two parts to a properly optimized website, on-site and off-site optimizaiton. The on-site search engine optimization includes making sure the actual HTML code is properly validated and contains the least amount of code to perform the functions you need (bulky code will take longer to index and can be indexed incorrectly or not at all). The on-site optimization also includes properly optimized content, keywords, etc. Make sure this content is unique, nicely worded and has a good keyword density. The off-site search engine optimization includes in-bound linkbuilding, social network marketing and general site marketing and site promotion. Obviously these points can be expanded upon. Google is your friend and there is a wealth of this sort of information online. Go forth and find it.
You essentially need to add your keyword to relevant areas in your page Title tags META keywords META descriptions H1 - H6 Headings Content Image ALT Text Bold text Anchor text Concentrate on putting your keyword in those areas and you are well on your way

First of all make the meta title of the web pages properly. The keyword should be properly targeted within 70-80 characters. Then give your most important keyword in H1 tag and try to place it on the top of the page to get maximum benefit. The content should be keyword rich and make use of bold and italics where ever applicable. Also, the internal linking should be done properly.
