Free Hosting - Rude, inconsiderate & greedy

Greetings, DigitalPoint members. here is a rant which i would like you all to hear.

Ok, So im an administrator of a hosting company providing free hosting.

many of these signups are FROM DP.

I have got 200+ orders for free hosting - Why is this annoying?

    - The majority of them use fake, illegal or fraudulent details.
    - I have said in BOLD LETTERS and in my posts - Warez is not allowed. Rapidleech is not allowed, overall anything illegal is not allowed. But i still have people from digitalpoint going against the regulations and uploading rapidleech, uploading warez crap, and expecting a top notch service for nothing but there illegal activities.

    - I also get emails from new users with completely incorrect signup information DEMANDING that i accept the order and give them hosting. This is rude, inconsiderate and downright greedy.

    - We do not allow china residents for hosting due to the plain basic fact that 95% of them are conducting illegal activities or have malicious scripts. We have a pretty bold notice saying no china users yet we are getting 25+ signups a day from china. IS IT HARD TO READ OUR ENGLISH SAYING WE DO NOT ALLOW CHINA? Should i translate DO NOT ALLOW CHINA from english to chinese - then maybe we will get a better result?

Free Hosting is a privilege, treat it as a privilege and not a service. We provide the servers at our cost - What do you have to do to get free hosting? Nothing, So treat it with respect.

Im completely sick of RUDE, inconsiderate and demanding people - Take Note DP. If any of you decide to conduct illegal activities on my server systems - I will be reporting you on DP, warning everyone of your activities and i will report you to the authorities.

Are there any other hosting administrators out there getting sick of the rude, greedy users?

If you're running a free host you should be expecting this kind of behavior, cause it's free... they have nothing to lose if you suspend their account or ban their IP, they just use different IP or proxy and create a new account with fake names as you mentioned above.

This is indeed a big downside of free hosting, but a downside you'll have to manage to work with, and just by telling them not to do it won't ever ever make them not do it anymore, no matter the text size you write it with...

I get ya, but that's the risk in giving out free hosting. The majority will abuse it and some will use it and still complain. But it's that 2% that use it legitimately and are thankful that make it all worth it. Also, there are so many free hosts out there - and while it's easy to blame users of being greedy, it's often overlooked at how greedy some hosts are. I've seen lots of free hosts that steal user content, user data (selling email lists, etc). Or overselling or stealing traffic off of users or doing just nasty things to legitimate users of their hosting.

But yeah lots of scammers and abusers out there looking to do nasty things. Easiest way to stop these kind of signups is to disable sendmail and make people open a ticket to have it enabled (prevents spam) and add captcha to your signup forms.

you can always ask for a small deposit and you will see how fast they turn away. Even though you will be giving free service to them, but spammers hate to put any money upfront, on the other hand legit customers wont have any problem with that.

I think we'll go with phone/sms verification.... And yeah, put more details into the forms as required, like forum usernames, add facebook connect etc. That way we have just a little bit more to add to the reports to authorities and other governing / moderating bodies. Such as these below useful links:

I offer 100MB space and 1GB transfer for people new to hosting, or people with very low traffic websites and which don't require much diskspace.

As I don't give away ridiculous amounts of space and transfer I tend not to get so many dodgy signups, but the ones that do come through WHMCS/MaxMind picks up. I always do a quick manual check too. I don't allow any orders made via proxy.

Suppose you have to just put up with it.

Why not charge them a very low rate, say $1/mth. That way the majority who are "rude, inconsiderate and greedy" will stay away, although some will still come. And those who are serious but do not have a lot of spare change will sign up considering it's only $1 a month, which I believe most of us can afford.

Its not a problem if you know what to setting.
If you already do the configuration, even your client installed RL but they are not able to use it.
