What sort of server would I need for 2000+ unique views per day?

Discussion in 'Site & Server Administration' started by hugodiaz, Sep 2, 2007.

Just as the title says, what sort of server would I need to easily handle 2000+ unique views per day? Almost all areas on my website use MySQL. The software I am using includes SMF, Pligg and Serendipity.

I am afraid that my current hosting company might be trying to oversell me on my needs. That's not a very bad thing as I anticipate a lot of growth soon, but I just want to hear a second opinion.

Thanks in advance for any insight you can give me. :)

1st what is your current host? 2nd it depends on the average amount of space/kb's/mb's that is loaded per page with 2000+ unique visitors. Are you already at these numbers? If so, have you noticed any issues? We will be able to help you more with you responses.

do you also stream video? like YT etc?

i think the best hosting for you would be dedicated as that way you are sure no one else is using up your resources or b/w

Well the area of the website that uses pligg has always been a little slow. I don't think the page sizes are too large. Mainly I just have text etc like on the forum. I don't do any video streaming, but I would like to upload videos to youtube and also have them on my site a little later in the future.

I am currently with LiquidWeb, and I really like their service, but that doesn't mean I am completely against changing.

Yes, I will be going for a dedicated server, but I'm just not sure how much power I need which is why I posted here. :)

go on for a low end dedicated server and later you can go on the higer measures..

or if you think a dedicated is going against your budget try a VPS for starters...

I agree. I have sites with more then 4x the traffic on shared servers for around $10 a month. Although, if you are planning on growing quickly and have the $$$ go with a dedicated server. It sure can't hurt :).

A basic VPS with 256 guaranteed ram should be enough, though be sure to be someplace that allows easy upgrades to better plans as your traffic grows. ServInt is great.

    Thanks for the replies everyone!

I think I will stick with the shared plan for now and then move if I get the expected growth later. :)

Thanks also for the hosting suggestions, but I'm not going to leave LiquidWeb unless I experience some serious problems or have to make some budget cuts.

I am a firm believer that you get what you pay for. ;)

2000 uniques a day can be easily handled by the shared host, i dont think you will need dedicated server anytime soon :)

Nothing special. This could fit in on a good shared hosting server without any problems since 2000+ views isn't that much traffic. The rule of thumb is don't spend more than you need to until you need to. Start with a shared hosting account then move onto a VPS or dedicated if your host raises any objections.
