How accurate is Alexa ranking?

My website http://store.ijdmtoy.com was ranking over 240,000 in US couple weeks ago and I have been actively working on social bookmarking, changing my website title, keywords and blog posting for almost 3 weeks and today my US ranking is down to 120,000.

I am really happy, but I want to know whether this is actually accurate and really means anything?

 

Last time I checked, which has been a while, alexa is all about
traffic. And they used to only track visitors that had the toolbar.
So, it was an educated guess as to your popularity. The more
traffic, and traffic that could be counted, the better.

What was not good about alexa is that you can pump your ranking
with a lot of mindless traffic.

It was not a very good sign as to how your site was doing.

They may improved, but I still don't think it means much.

You might be able to look at the stats and decide where and what
is giving you traffic. But that's it. Raw stats. Raw visitor logs.

That has nothing to do with google rank, SERP, etc.

So you changing title, etc. would have nothing to do with alexa,
unless those changes made search engines list you higher and you
got a lot more traffic from them.

I myself would not give alexa ranking a second thought for anything
remotely related to SEO.

It is a tool, for sure. But not the best tool.

Alexa ranking is ok as a rough guide. I manage quite a number of sites and if i compare the sites in regards to traffic which i know we get and how that corresponds to the Alexa ranking, it is fairly accurate. To go from 240,000 to 120,000 is a big jump though and is a bigger move than say going from 2,000,000 to 1,000,000.

 

alexa is "Accurate" but can EASILY be gamed.

 

I don't know where Alexa pools all their data from, but like anything, they basically are offering the best estimates as they can. This isn't to say that their estimates are anywhere near what they claim, however they do serve as a general idea as to where a site would show up or rank at least. I wouldn't look at it as if they are giving out exacts but more so a general idea and it should never go any further than that.

 

Alexa is not very Accurate and should never be seen as a main indicator for any site.

 

I agree more with Mega B. I don't think Alexa can be used for much of anything. People used to use it to place value on a site, but really it has been shown to not really be much use there either. Others have stated reasons why it is such a poor tool to use. The question is, how many people actually use the Alexa toolbar? The answer is probably not many. This skews the numbers and certain niche's would be more likely to have traffic that would use the toolbar versus other niche's.

 

I think its just an estimate its not accurate. And sometimes it give fake reports.

 

Alexa give you chance compare your site with competition however it is not very accurate.

 

From what I see it is just a measure of how many hits the site gets. For all that is worth....a site might get very little traffic but still serve its intended purpose well.

In my experience, alexa rank is very important for me. Now alexa will show about percentage of keyword performance for particular website. You can consider alexa rank.

Well not that accurate as it measures the traffic of users who have the toolbar (basically not everybody)

Alexa is also popular in Asian countries so Asian websites do have an advantage as most of their users have this toolbar installed.

If you are located in more emergent countries who have never heard of Alexa, you ranking will be lower and you are at a disadvantage

 

Alexa rank will provide exact traffic details for your website.

 

Its not very accurate, because it collects data from alexa toolbar. It provides some sort of statistical representation, though.

 

I personally don't care about Alexa rankings. I focus more on ranking of my targeted keywords.

 

And alexia rankings can be manipulated so it's not entirely trustworthy.

 

Alexa is surely not accurate, it all depends upon traffic.
