Head on over to wordpress.org and download and install All in One SEO plugin and then carefully configure it. It makes a lot of difference for on page SEO. Apart from this, download and install sitemap plugin as well, so that Google and other search engines can more easily find your posts.

All-in-one seo is a great plugin and I use it for all my wordpress based sites, however, this plugin is NOT compatible with the latest 3.0 version so make sure not to update if you are using this plugin. If you haven't yet redefined the Settings > Permalinks to %postname% I recommend doing that also as it generates seo-friendly urls.

I tend to do all my on-page SEO within the source code of wordpress, I have just a slight tweek that with added plugins it will increase the amount of time a spider takes to crawl through your web pages as it will be stuffed with unecessary coding... Just my superstition ;)

I use Thesis from DIYThemes.com for all of my WP blogs... And have never had a need to use any SEO plugins. I can control everything I need to from title, meta description, , meta robots, etc. for every page/post directly from Thesis. It's a GREAT theme... very SEO-friendly out of the box as well as looks great out of the box.

Yep, Thesis is a great tool, I would start there for sure as it's a great program for SEO, and also think about some of the great SEO plugins out there for free.

But regardless, publishing great content is a sure fire way to get good SEO out of your blog.

Wordpress is already extremely SEO friendly. Though to help you consider downloading some free plugins. Just search in the plugins section for SEO, and pick the one you think will work best for you. You need to consider the following:
the ability to edit, titles, descriptions, keywords, and other meta tags
and if it helps the existing code become better optimised.

Here is a Quick List of must have Wordpress SEO plugins:

-All In One SEO ( Free ) - takes care of the meta tags/descriptions, index/no index for categories, tags, archives, etc. Keeps it clean.
-Redirection (Free) - takes care of the 404 pages, especcialy handy if you start messing with your permalink structure, which I don't recommend, but it happens
-YARPP ( Yet Another Related Posts Plugin) (Free) - Interlinks the posts on your site by creating "Related Post" structure.
-SEO Smart Link (Free) - Links yout posts to each other based on the specified keywords.
-Google XML Sitemap ( Free ) - Generates XML sitemap for your blog, submits it to google. Helps with fast and clean indexing of your posts.
-SEOPressor( Not Free) - Ultimate On-page SEO Optimization. Takes care of H-tags, Text decorations, Titles, alt images, keyword density, linking structure, etc. Powerhouse of on-page wordpress seo. Must Have, just came out this week. Link in my sig.

Theere is a bunch of others, that are "nice to have" .. but those in the list above are a must, because the cover the whole structure of your site.
