Why is my competitor higher on google when I have a higher PR?

I am with nopests.com a pest control company in Westchester, New York. When you type the following searches into google:

    Westchester pest control
    pest control
    pest control westchest ny

my competitors, Surburban Pest control, Garrie pest control, and sometimes others come up in Google before mine. My company has a higher PR and we have a blog, twitter account, and facebook unlike the other companies. We even spend time to link exchange and comment on other blogs. What are we doing wrong? Why are they ahead of us?

Its due to untargeted backlinking.Your off page SEO is not done correctly.Backlinks are built randomly without proper keywords research and anchor text

Would have to research the competition for you real fast but a few things....

Page rank has nothing to do with the ranking of the site or its position. It hasn't in years.
Twitter and facebook is not SEO
Link Exchanges, directory submissions and blog commenting is largely useless as well.

If you want to rock the serps read this over real fast.... http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=1835616

And don't feel bad. What you listed are common misconceptions and myths about SEO that 99 percent of the providers around here subscribe to. Fairly common problem.

    hope that helps,
    Nigel

    EDIT:
Yep, that is it in a nutshell, well stated....

A lot of people get page rank mixed up with SERPs, you competitors probably have more backlinks with the right anchor text or have set up their on-site SEO better.

    My two cents:
As said before the Google PageRank of a webpage has absolutely nothing to do with the search engine ranking of a webpage. It's just that you competitors do a better job in link-building than you.

The sites that are ranking higher than you have more authority.

DMOZ and Yahoo Directory are highly regarded authority sites, so I would get a link from them.

If your competitions page has very high authority then you will have to get more links on trusted pages.

Getting a do follow link from a authority site is like getting a Page rank link.

Page Rank passes Page rank to your site.
Authority passes Authority to your site.
Trust passes Trust to your site.

Your competition may only have 100 – 200 links but there links have more trust and/or authority in Google.

Domain Age on active sites obtain a lot more trust from Google.

    I hope this helps

As people have said, Pagerank doesn't have much to do with ranking for a particular keyword. But you also have to remember that the PR that you see, May not be the PR Google sees. PR that shows on the toolbar or any pagerank checker is only updated every 3 months or so.

PR does not have anything to do with serp's. I would focus on good backlinks and good content on your site and you should start seeing the traffic come in regardless of page rank. just my thought from what i hear learned recently the hard way.

I would start with on-page SEO first. Download a tool that would run a comparison for you. something like link-assistant.com and see how your on-page optimization compares.
You must your site optimized before you start building backlinks. Backlinks in this case are secondary. If your site is well optmized, then run backlink comparison tool and see where they are getting their backlinks and try to get yourself some links there too.

Easy solution would be to buy links from high PR sites. But On-Page SEO must be done first.

i think your on page is not good compare to their website. key words is the important for SEO.you just go through their website and find where is the back links and traffic comes from then you will do work on their back link website.
