What do you all think about linkwheels? Do they help ranking in the long term or benefits in the short term or if they help at all? I've been pretty much interested in this concept but don't want it to hurt my current rankings..

All Linkwheels are is using Web 2.0 properties. Things like Ezine, Article sites, Squidoo, Hubpages etc. These have been around for a long time, well before the term "Linkwheel" came out.

As for an actual linkwheel, It depends how unique your content is. Alot of people try and get away with using spun content. Which doesn't always go well when you are basically linking to the next spun article one after the other. Makes it an easy path for google to follow.

don't waste money on fad related nonsense. Track down someone who actually understands the value of merit based, relevant and useful links. Its not rocket science, it just requires actual work.

Link wheel is good if you are good writer and know how to link between articles.

It did not help me at all I paid $60 for someone to make my a link wheel of 6 web 2.0 sites and I never even got any backlinks from those web 2.0 sites and this has been over two months the should have shown up by now. The content was unique, but I got nothing from it. I would try it out by linking to a few web 2.0, but don't make the mistake I did and pay anyone to do it.

In the past time, link wheel was a good way to gain quality backlinks for your site. But now, according to what I know, this SEO strategy has become useless gradually.
Yes, you may not gain what you need even if you spend much time on link wheel strategy.

In my experience link wheels have boosted my blog to page 3 in Google in 2 months from scratch. You have to update your mini-blogs regularly, and ping them each time you update. Also you must write articles, and use the link in the article to your mini-blogs to provides the mini-blog link juice. Ping your article to when they are approved.

I think the idea is that you should never do the exact same linking strategy every time. Mix it up a bit and try to write useful content in each web 2.0. In my experience using web 2.0 sites are good for backlink but I wouldn't rely solely on it. Keep adding to the linkwheel and you will create an effective funnel for traffic to your website.
