They have become mandatory. Just make sure that the site does not use the NoFollow attribute on the link and the site does not Archive the page after a period of time. Both of these make the link worthless.
It was good activity about 3 years ago. Now, is completely worthless. I recommend you using your times on other methods as blogging, article marketing among others. Just to let you know this forum is kind of mislead.
don't worry too much about do-follow or no as suggested by a member above, just go for it, find some related blogs to your site, post some relative and useful comments, that's a great way to get free backlinks.
Yes man go and spam other blogs, instead of making a relationship with the blogger that may give you a real backlink.
blog commenting really woks. I often do it for my off page SEO. But, I always choose the blog that: dofollow, high PR innerpage, and auto approve
