In terms of open source, I would go for ecshop, but only if you can read chinese.
If you don't then Magento is a good solution =)

Best is at best a relative term. The questions you be asking yourself is WHAT shopping cart best suits your needs and will do the job for your business at the end of the day the shopping cart is nothing more than a tool to achieve your goals.

With that said, If you are accepting personal information storing or accepting credit cards, take the time to make sure your shopping, open source or otherwise is PCI compliant. The "jury" is still out on a lot of open source shopping carts. Be careful and do your home work.

Oscommerce is Open Source meaning you can adjust it to suite your needs. If you can't code, outsource the work!

I've worked with a whole lot of them, the best two i found are OSCommerce and Magento
OSCommerce has great online support so its easy to find plugins/add-ons, but it looks very plain, there are a few things missing in the vanilla installation.
Magento has a great look - very professional looking but as with anything out of the box - it will be a few more versions until its nice and stable.

I am a bit biased but I like PopCart.net . Popcart is completely white label, easy to use, and full integrates with Paypal and Google checkout! Best of all, this script is remotely hosted so there is no need to install anything on your server!

I would say magento is the best for most people. If you are using an obscure payment gateway, then oscommerce might be more your thing.

X-cart by far is the best. They have great support team and lots of updates / plug-ins. There are over 100 difference choices for payment method. They use smarty template which is great if you need to do heavy modification to your site template to give it an unique look.

I hope Os commerce well suite for the applications. If you are using CMS like Joomla you can use Virtue-mart, a free ecommerce solution in Joomla..virtue-mart shopping cart in joomla is the best bcoz there is lot of option in that component.

I highly recommend Miva Merchant. They’re always updating and adding new features (free of charge), and the program is very user friendly. Miva usually comes free of charge with web hosting.
