A lot, Not just the fact you get a link but also you get quite a few visitors from profiles etc.

In the greater scheme of things the traffic isnt going to make you a millionaire overnight but its a good stream of steady (ish) traffic.

    I beg to differ.

All in all you can spend your time so much better fabricating original content for your website, that is if you believe you can make new content on a regular basis.

Remember that content is king and queen. Linking is a mere third or...

Most regulars don't come here (or anywhere else) for the signature links, but for the info. Contributing and receiving information from fellow forum "buddies".

That said it is one of many ways to "up" your traffic.

Hrmm I haven't seen that one.

    Would like to see it.

Must be a niche connecting to a specific topic that is big on dp.

Miko I was talking about a lot if you signup to about 50 or so forums, one site I look after gets over 100 referals a day from them.

Like I said not a lot but enough to make it worth it.

If you post in a forum with a signature link that is interesting to the readers of the forum then you will get a fair amount of traffic from it.

Don't expect to much though - this is a popular forum and some threads only get a few views and not many people will click on the sig links.

The key is to post in relevant places if you want traffic.

They most likely owned a directory which does benefit from a signature link (as far as submissions), however webmasters rarely click on ads so you will need to rely on conventional methods for actual revenue

Definitely have to agree with yfs1 on the fact that it's likely the result of a directory, but it could also be that the person asked for a review that got good attention, posted a teasing partial article or other and got lots of visits as a result. However, and no offense to your friend, if a forum is/was his main referrer for the month or any other time, he probably isn't getting that much traffic total; further, they need to look at ways of getting traffic from other sources for longevity and sustainability purposes IMO.

As far as posting in blogs, this can be helpful, provided you're posting something of value, otherwise, it's likely to just get deleted (or not approved) by the blog owner and first impressions count ... if a drive-by poster comes to a blog with a "BS" post with the mere intent of backlinking, now they're on the radar of the owner ;)

Very good example! And good point too. I personally never click ads from other webmasters, just a habit I guess.

What I do is consider the amount of time I would have to spend in order to maintain that kind of traffic.

Point is, if you want traffic from a forum sig, you need to post on it very regularly, say once or twice a day.

If you have to do that on 50 different forums just to maintain a stream of traffic that will evaporate anyway the minute you stop "forum-trolling" (in the best sense of course), then what have you really achieved?

If, on the other hand, you spent that time on creating original content, it would last forever (or at least a lot longer) and would be able to attract a lot more visitors in the long run.

At least you need first to think content, and then later on try signatures for traffic.

Remember: No valuable original content - no click-through's and definitely no returning visitors.

depends on forums you are joining and reputation you have therein. have you been extending helping hand to the members there or not. size of the market also matters then titles of your threads (hint hint) also counts.

Depending on the traffic on that forum. You will get a lot of traffic if the forum is good and have high traffic.
