    One of my friends has a smf board and it is filled with spam too. I think this is a general security problem of all SMF boards. Here are the things that you can do;

    - Add a captcha on posting replies and threads. This will decrease the spam.
    - Ban the ips of those spammers.
    - Ban the words that they use in their posts so for example if a spammer uses "sex" on his post it may appear as "***". Ban every single word that they use like "pills", "mortgage" etc. Also you can ban the product names and domains.
    - Check this mod.
    - If these steps don't resolve your problem you may consider changing your forum system to phpBB, VB or another system.

    Good luck.

    I set up an SMF forum for a client recently and I have to delete 1 or 2 spambot members a day, but I have captcha in place which has prevented spammy threads and replies completely.

    I also know some ways to prevent spamming. You could try to program these limitations to your forum:
    1. Newbies cannot post link or signature in their post
    2. Only registered users that posted more than 10 post can post link and signature in their posts
    3. Ban the IP of the spammers
    4. Posts with several links and suspicious words cannot appear in forums until they are approved by moderator
    5. Old posts will be automatically locked so cannot be answered any more

    In smf 2 charge a single paid subscription for 30 years of $2.00 to post.

    Make a new group

    set it to invitation only

    Promote to that group automatically through PayPal API
