Can you make sites like these on wordpress?

I am obviously a noob and I know it's a simple question but, can you make sites like flickr.com or a site like ratemypuppy.com using wordpress? Basically a site where someone can upload their photos and other people can rate the photos. If so where would you start and what plugins would you need at first?

    thanks in advance

take a look at http://www.zenphoto.org/ and http://gallery.menalto.com/ these are both open source web based photo gallery and definatly the first script allows you to enable a rating feature for your photos. Not sure about wordpress integration these are more standalone fully customizable sites.

    good luck

Very interesting site. There is a WP plugin for that, but it has limited functions.

This is possible. Not a very big thing to do for Wordpress. But I don't know why you are looking for WP in it cause it has absolutely nothing to do with WP. Rather if you use those rating scripts with an image upload feature then that will give you more features related to this kind of site.

I think that you may have better luck using gallery software, I know my host gives me about 5 to choose from in fantastico Deluxe And I'm sure yours does too...
You may be able to do it in WP with plugins / themes, but WP is not designed for that.

It is possible with a plugin, but your options would be limited, you'd be better off finding a free image script instead.

Wordpress is more about pure content, not membership, galleries or other stuff...

With all their plug-ins, you can basically do anything with Wordpress! If you aren't as clued up on how to do everything, there are quite a few guys out there who speciallize in Wordpress.

I'd suggest joomla! instead, but it's still possible with WP.

You can do this in WordPress without gallery plugin (you only need rating plugin). just trust me, WordPress is more likely to behave as CMS today not only as Blogging Platform
