Very true, some free niche traffic methods: relevant blog/forum comments with dofollow link, Yahoo Answers, and buying niche traffic from ads like Google Adwords. I would only recommend buying lots of traffic if you are selling a product too and can see a good ROI on it but you might be able to get repeat traffic if your content is good.

Depends on your niche. Its as simple as that. I mean, backlinks are always good to have, and I recommend earning the vast majority through article distribution, however, the key is in earning as much of a diverse variety of backlinks as possible, as to make things look more natural to Google as possible.

So... if you earn 400 backlinks from distributing articles, make sure to earn an equal amount from social bookmarking, forum posting, blog commenting, etc.

As far as which ones will give you more traffic, well... no amount of off page work will earn you traffic if you are ranking for a dodgy keyword. Its all in keyword choice, and what you do to outrank your competition.
