First you have to have professional designer skills, and after it you will need any software! :)

It all depends on for what purpose you are building a website. results won't be good if you just know a bit of html and use a WYSIWYG editor like dreamweaver. if you are hell bent on designing the website yourself, there's a lot of learning to do.

john if your interested in just getting something up quick i'd suggest finding a template website and buidling on that or alternatively use a CMS system like joomla with a template and pluggins.

Alternatively there are plenty of people offering web design services in the advertised sections and if your making 3k a month with 0 investment like your sig suggests then outsourcing is probably your best option

Well try using a WYSIWYG programs like DreamWeaver and see how it goes. You can also try CMS's that work pretty well(ie: wordpress)

Look up on tutorials and examples on simple designs so you can get idea's. Know that you don't always need everything to be graphical.

If you have a webhost, you can go through the cpanel and install a wordpress in fantastico feature.
Then, you just need to find a wordpress template and change the template.

I think it's the easiest way to create a website without any knowledge of html/coding

Dreamweaver or iWeb other simple application. If you have no clue about design use inspiration sources rather than templates to make something of your own.. one out of many sites for that: http://www.prettydesign.org

i'm not that advanced either but let me just add from personal experience... dreamweaver can totally screw you up if you don't know enough html... if you only work in design mode you tend to hit enter to go to the next line (it automatically creates paragraph coding) and then you delete some thing's etc, next thing you know, you have a bunch of <p> & </p> all over the place and thing's may look good in one browser, but be totally jacked up in another because the coding is all messed up... you'll have trouble aligning things properly and so on... it forced me to learn coding better because i spent too long trying to fix thing's when it's easier to just go into the code to do something sometimes...

i used html tidy to check sites i did only in design view and sites i did after i realized how important it was to check the coding and gosh i had errors galore in the sites i did without using my own coding lol... and those sites tend to look totally different depending which browser i use compared to the sites i do now which look pretty much the same in whatever browser i test...

that's just my 2cents... HTML is pretty easy to learn, just download a cheat sheet and while you're at it, i'd learn CSS as well, once you learn the basic outline of how it works just use a cheat sheet lol (that's what i do)... it's not like trying to learn php which is making me crazy!

If you are a novice, you may want to start with a template and modify the template to meet your needs.

    I agree.

You could download a template from:

    http://www.freelayouts.com/websites/html-templates

    http://www.freecsstemplates.org/

and also download Kompozer (open source and free html editor) from kompozer.net

and then open the index file in Kompozer and start editing the template according to your needs!

If you really want a professional and unique website you have two options,

    1. Hire a web designer.
    2. Spend years training and become a web designer.

You cannot just download some software and come out with something truly professional.

Your best bet would be to find a free template or buy a premium template, your site however, will not be unique, and a lot of templates I've seen up for download aren't even coded validly.
