Learn from my mistake ;)

Okay, i just tought I'd share my personal experience from which i learned a LOT with everybody else. Everybody learns from their personal mistakes but its nice when people share their mistakes with other people so they do not make the same mistakes :)

When I joined the COOP i tought it was great, with 2 of my sites i had decent weight and this enabled me to get page 1 ranking with many of my sites. And well guess what, the COOP is great, however, due to the tremendous power this gave my sites and their SERPS i never did much other link building of any other kind, COOP weight as all I needed.

But when my weight dropped, my serps dropped slightly, not much... then nofollow was introduced to coop and guess what, all my serps went down to 40+... Profits went virtually down more than 60%!!

All of a sudden I realized the big mistake ive done all the time, and hence why im posting so no one else who loves the coop and is really benefiting from it makes it as well. Now im relatively new in this business so I'm sure all the big names out here, and even semi big names never have commited this mistake but all the newbies (like i used to be) are bound to do this too :)

So dont just rely on the coop, the best links are permanent links from other related pages, while you got COOP pointing at your site make sure you build some of these ;)

PS.- This post is intended for newbies so please dont tell me i was really stupid and stuff cause i already know that. :D

Good post. Tough lesson to learn though.

I look at the coop as just one type of marketing tool at my disposal. If I used it as my main source of link building I would be afaid of it one day being shut down.

Seiya - not stupid at all. All of us are not perfect and make mistakes. I think the best advise as you mentioned is to use as part of a general marketing plan for your sites - not the sole marketing tool.

At least you made some good money while it lasted!

    Thanks for sharing.

Just curious .... did you notice the number/percentage of backlinks you lost after the nofollow?

Yes, one of my sites had a PR6 with about 3000+ backlinks showing on google and after that it showed about 300. a 10x loss.

The worst part actually is not the backlink loss but i think google removed me from the serps totally for the keywords i targetted... nothing ive done has been able to get me back up there.

To the guy who said "common sense 101" - glad it is for ya, gl :)

EXACTLY what happened to me P6 is now PR3. 16,000 bl's now 153. Manually banned from ALL kw's that I was prominant in for 5 years. I have submited a couple reinclusions with absolutely no change (9 months). I have given up on this domain basically and hope that I can one day return to SERPS.

This really reenfoces the need to NOT rely on Ses for traffic. I know it's next to impossible but I believe this to be the a good strategy. Find other ways to solidify a consistant flow of traffic. If G, MSN or Y favors your site it's nothing but a bonus. In particular G algos Pi$$ me off. It seems that Google has the power to flick a switch and end your online business activities overnight whether you're guilty or not. This is because they control (have the largest share) searches. This is something you can't fight. The only solution I can come up with is stop focussing most of your marketing to Se's and channel that energy elsewhere.

Actually none of those links were from DP COOP. Approx 40% of them were LV (Removed 4 months ago) and the rest are natural links.

Submitting a new site to many directories at once can hurt a site too.

BTW, whoever left me the red you should have signed it :D
