    - I've started off with some directories PR6 - PR0
    - Article writing & publication to free article directories
    - Submitted articles to paid bloggers
    - Manual selection of competitor .edu and .gov backlinks
    - Analysis of the top 10 websites backlinkis and picked out the ones with a "follow" and PR Juice
    - Social networking on Facebook, Twitter, StumbleUpon

    Are there any other suggestions anyone can think of?

    high quality unique content however will bring you ten thousands of organic backlinks
    there is a time in early web publisher career to do SOME of your above listed BL practices
    then there are years and decades of simply hard working to actually fulfill customers expectations by creating thousands of pages unique content leading to an ever increasing number of generic BLs

    You can try press release and creating web2.0 properties as well. Don't forget to bookmark your web2.0 properties to their better indexing. I would recommend you to go with squiddo and hubpages.. Keep on posting articles on ezine as well.

    Link wheel is a gray hat SEO technique and it should be avoided.

    How it works: Link wheel can be made by starting your own blogs (WordPress or BlogSpot) and you can add links of your main site to these blogs. The number of blogs may vary as it totally depends on how much you can manage?

    For many webmasters / SEOs, link wheel is a good technique to get backlinks but for many SEOs (including myself), it is not worthy now as Google does not give any weight to this strategy.

    Just try with press release and social bookmarking. It will help to increase more back links After that you can also bookmark your submitted articles.

    It sounds to me like you are on the right track :)

    There are also some good classified sites and advertising forums.

    http://WebsiteLink.net is an example of a decent place where you should be able to build some DoFollow backlinks.
