I've been deciding to start a directory for awhile now and I'm unsure if they will provide me the income I need. So to the people who runs their own directory, do you guys make a good amount of money for it? (need another income because I just been banned by google from their Adsense program) thanks in advance guys!
No directories don’t make a loot of money, without you investing a loot of money first. If you chose to offer free listings you don’t make money and loose large amounts of time approving listings.
I disagree. I've made a ton of cash off a directory I barely put any effort into, it had a good pagerank on the main homepage. Just make sure it has strong backlinks and you'll be set.
I started the ableshare free directory about two months ago. I agree that you can not make money from it. Unless you can combine it with other service, which I don't have interests. Anyway I will keep directory alive for as long as possible since I have other projects as well. Maybe I will make a lot of money after 10 or 20 years?
“ton of cash†its a concept not a number a lot of money for you could me nothing for someone else , time is money, so normally you spend money or time. People just think they build a directory in a day an they will get rich.
directories can make lots of money but you have to be not cheap it is a lot of effort in the beggining, but after a few months it takes up a little time, tons of profit if you smart and know what youre doing My directory has a PR of zero but I've sold about $250 in my first 3 weeks, imagine after the PR update. You have to know some secrets to attrack traffic . . .
It did take 4 months for pagerank to update, but I really didn't do much else for it, I just had a strong homepage above it. Each persont o their own though.
IF you have a well designed and very unique directory, you can make a lot of money off it. Just make sure it's very selective, edited professionaly and SEO friendly. The majority of competitors out there are running generic templates, categories, etc... I don't consider them competition...
This is an excellent comment which I agree. Plus you need to invest heavily in marketing and promotion providing a professional 'front line and control support services'
I think directories are just in...and has a lot of potential in the future. My premium directory network is doing good even before the PR's of some of them getting updated.
I personally think Directories can make you lot of money if you invest alot in getting featured premium listings and getting strong backlinks that give you a high PR. A unique design is not the main thing, but the proper advertisement and sources that drive traffic to your dir mean alot for you in the future. The other thing is u need to either choose between which directory you can best handle, Niche directories are mostly good as the listings are of websites similar and in a General Directory you are in a jack of all and master of none situation and besides there are too too many General Web Directories as compared to the Niche ones! My 2 cents!
Yes, you can definitely make money from Directory but you have to create more categories with tons of contents for people to get interested.
In my eyes: NO I have for a while a paid directory. I'm promoting it and I have spend a lot of money on it. So far, nobody has paid the stupid low fee. (I'm not speaking about my bidding directory in my footer) That's another story. So far, I have more costs, than profit with my paid directory. I was also a long time a free directory. What a waste of time: in the last weeks of beeing a free directory, I received 100's of spam submissions. Think again, before you start with it. I have more bad things with it, than good things. I'm considering of letting my paid directory (not my bidding directory), just die ... I won't spend any money anymore on it. There are to many paid directories. And also after promoting a lot, I still got PR 0 after a year. Seems Matt Cutt is also busy, punishing paid directories as well. I can't speak anything good, about this person. To say it friendly GRRRRRRRR Jason
