To the left of the content, in the middle, to the right, over, or under?

I think the best placement is right when the user gets there in the middle top header area, somewhere noticable.

I am also finding this, but I would say at the top within the contents.

in the middle works for me..
Very noticeable because most visitors looking for a link that is located below the ads.
Never try other placement since then..

    Rectangle works inside the contents,
Textlink works below/above the menus or inside the contents
Skyscrapper works at the left or right side.

    That's my tipstrick of placements!

I doubled my CTR thru redesign. I had a traditional 3 column layout with content in the middle - & site index & ads on the sides.
I changed it to a wide content column on the left, 160px adsense column then 160px index column on the right. User's cursor has to pass over the ads to go from content to site index.

And don't forget to place your ads "ABOVE THE FOLD"! That's the most important things!

It's not so much by accident. It's just making them more more visible by placing the ads between where the user is and where he wants to go. Like TV commercials in the middle of a show.

Why not putting the Large Rectangle within your contents and adding more pics on it? That would be more "middle of a show"

I put ads wherever the visitors attention will be. Ex: Sometimes moving an ad below the fold has worked better than above the fold.

i think link ads in the site's navbar and context ads at the end of an article give the best results
