    There is no end to search engine optimization. You don't just build x amount of links and then proclaim that you are done.

    You will need to optimize your site for search engines for as long as you own the site.

    Think of SEO like losing weight. It's not a diet. It's a lifestyle change.

    It all depends on what you mean by complete. What are your goals? How competitive is your market? In my opinion, SEO is never done. It is an ongoing process.

    Wow, I love all the answers here... Actually the truth of the matter here is that you will SEO forever as long as you have a website that you want to rank for a certain keyword....

    Its not set it and forget. You will be doing SEO whether you know it or not. You just need to never stop building backlinks for your site. There are several ways to go about doing this, but only some work, some work very well, while others are just really crappy.

    Build Quality backlinks forever. If you stop, your competition will pass you by.

    So, how long for SEO - FOREVER.

    It depends on the competition of your keywords and the size of your site. If it is a big site with many pages, it will probably take you a lot of time.
