Google will show only 60 to 70 characters only in Google SERP (Seach engine result pages). So it is always better to include characters below 70.

Usually I have seen in many occasions Google displayed only 50 - 60 characters max so better to be in that limit.

We did a lot of testing with this when we built one of our sites and found the maximum title length that would fully display in Google was 67.

If you have less than 70 characters including space in title tag, I think you will be OK in your ranking. Just remember to include the keywords you are trying to rank for.

Depending on the circumstances, Google will typically take 67-to 70 characters.
Some article directories will accept up to 100 characters.
This is why you want to lead with your longtail keyword phrase. That is unless you do not care about rankings and only getting a link.
Yes characters includes spaces. Capitalize the first character of each word, except to, the, etc.
Words like Best, Top, Buy, Find, and Look are key added words.
Make sure you do not include any stop words, these are words that Google skips entirely, and is a very long, and surprising list.
If interested, do a Google search: Google Stop Words Listing Then chose the very first entry, 2 pages of 3 columns of words to print. This prevents using throw-away words in the all so important title.
Hope this helps, and makes it just a bit more complete. Seems from looking above, many are right on the money.

Normally, Google shows 60-70 chars in the title. The main question is how many chars Google takes into account for ranking? There are different guestimates, from first 50 till first 120. Another question is how the ranking influence of each word is dropping with the position in the title. I believe, the dependency is not linear. Like, the words within the first 50-70 chars have very similar influence, than there is a drop for the words in the next 50 chars or so, and the remaining words are not taken into account for ranking, imho.

The title should ideally be less than 64 characters in length. As many applications will display document titles in window titles, menus, etc where there is only limited room. Whereas, there is no limit on the length of a title, information providers are warned that it may be truncated if long.
