    I like zencart.

    The community support is HUGE.

Im not sure how much its changed since 2008 but if I needed a shopping cart id start there.

Only thing I didnt like about Zen at the time was the picture sizing for products... I wanted to use bigger picture sizes for products without it loading laggy. Had some issues with that. I made alot of money with Zen Cart tho..

The good thing here is that you can learn about a lot of unknown webstores plataforms.

One thing that is very interesting: a lot of people like Oscommerce. I don't like it. It is not professional. But, like we say: each one has his own opinion.

    :)

Try ecwid. Afaik that's who developed x-cart.

Personally, besides features I would also check customer service availability. I believe without good support and maintenance chanced are you'll remain alone with tech issues, unless you are a guru ^^

As a paid I'll go with Interspire or Volusion.
As a fee, there is no favorite one.

I have experience with osCommerce, CRE Loaded, Zen Cart and Magento. Depending on what the customer wants depends on the shopping cart software that I recommend. I know that a lot of people complain about the template monster templates but I use them and they work well. Sometimes you run into problems but I have only once ever had a problem where I had to contact TM. They were slow to fix it but it was fixed. The problem was that the slideshow worked on a Linux box but not a Windows box.

PABP compliant carts are important if you want to do any amount of online processing. Zen/OS et all are not very good choices, even though they may be 'easy' to use. Magento is nice, but you really need something compliant if you're going to be processing a lot of orders. Handoff gateways get around this problem, but can cause issues in some browsers, particularly those with adblocking, script blocking.

I would say hands down cs-cart is one of the best around. I have been using it ever since version 2.0 was released.

Ditto - the people behind it are great.

Like any software though what I'd give my left arm for is software where you don;t have to hack the core to get stuff done, which then creates a nightmare come upgrade time. EE on the CMS side goes some way to solving that, but if you could get a cart that just works and provided hooks in the presentation layer so you an upgrade doesn't turn out to be a complete PITA then I'd happily pay for it.

Really? Has WP or the plugins progressed that far? Don't see it myself for a serious site. The idea of plugins is another nightmare as you run the risk of support ending for one of your core products. Dave's Cart "X" plugin doesn't get developed and you are stuck with it or a migration to another plugin or platform.
