    IMO, the best directory is yahoo dir. but the best free directory is dmoz.

    Definitely DMOZ, But listing on it is a big deal! of course if you list your site in correlate directories it is good too!

    Forgot to say.... actually if you can find a directory that is focused on your topic area and geographic location that has at least a PR5 on the homepage that would be the best.

    DMOZ is the best free directory but depending on your topic, you could be waiting years. I've been waiting 4 years to have my site accepted and I see some of my competitor websites on there..
    Maybe the editor is a competitor.

    Yahoo is the same, like you could wait months before being accept unless you pay $300.

    The next best directories are niche directories, that are related to your website. It also depends on the outbound links on the same page. The less the better so you get more link juice.

    What is your definition of "best directory"? However, I will name a few of quality directories preferred myself. :)

    1. DMOZ - Free but cannot rely on since your site approval is depends on editor
    2. Yahoo - Well known directory
    3. BOTW - Another quality directory with established status
    4. Joeant - Old and established
    5. Business.com - Good one

    Depends on your criteia for judging the "best" if you want a directory with a bit of "value" to the listing then Dmoz - its free but is hard to get listed as you rely on someone actually approving your listing.
