Is google penalizing sites listed in multiple directories?

I think they could be, I've heard the rumor from another SEO contact also.

    Whats your thoughts?

Are you talking about SEOs who are posting in this forum
and asking if submitting sites to directories is a good idea?

    :)

Not that I'm aware of - I have sites listed in several directories that are doing just fine. I wouldn't think that being listed in a quality directory would be an issue.

If you're using some of the crappy directories that allow anything and everything (especially if you pay their fee) for the sole purpose of trying to manipulate the search results or satisfy your ego when it comes to the green pixels, then yeah, why wouldn't you expect to see some kind of repercussion from those actions?

The answer is no...or all your competitor would have to do to ruin your rankings in Google would be to submit your site to a bunch of crappy directories.

Google treats directories just like any other site. Good directories rank in the search engines themselves for their pages, pass PR, and pass link juice. Spammy, crap, and useless directories get penalized or ignored by Google...so they end up being a waste of time if you submit your site to them.

What if your competition dumps your site onto every stinkhole just to take you down?

I hope you are not saying that G. will punish you for that

Obviously, having a site listed in multiple directories is not dangerous. How many THOUSANDS of directories do you think have sites like Yahoo, CNN, Wikipedia, etc listed. I don't see Google penalizing them. You'll be fine.

i'm just suggesting that it's likely a waste of time as there's probably no benefit from it. ;)

It is certainly not the case... however, since google is anyway giving less and less importance to directories' listings, it might appear to be so... to lot many people!

It funny how people always hear rumours but never posts any kind of proof, most of the top web directories have multiple listings in directories. Ask your SEO contact why the top directories get away with this!

Websites won’t be penalised for being listed in quality directories.

    Thanks Brian

Your site will not being penalized just for listed in many directories. The most possible case is those directories are yours and all of them hosted under the same host or same IP range. If you do cross linking between them altogether, it would be a chance for being penalized. That is an easily to be identical pattern.

I'm 99.9% sure that they're not. People who post rumours like this are almost always wrong. Don't listen to them.

we should penalize G instead for what ever you search they will bring wikipedia in front of you, when there are thousands of site relevant to the keyword searched
